I CONFERENCES OF DEAFBLIND AND PRESENTATION OF THE RED-WHITE CANE IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

Last Wednesday 26th of April, the celebration of the I Conference of Deafblind and the presentation of the red-white Cane that the Deafblind Community use as an identity resource-, took place in Tenerife. These Conferences were organized by FASOCIDE and ASOCIDE of Canary Islands with the cooperation of the Territorial Council of ONCE in Canary Islands.

During the morning, the presentation of the red-white Cane took place where different authorities, public safety groups, politic groups, students from the Certificate of Higher Education (HNC) in Mediation and Communication, professionals on the area, etc., were present during the ceremony.

Among others, we had the support from the Counselor of employment, Social Politics and household, the Government of the Canary Islands, Mrs. Cristina Valido, and with the President of the Territorial Council of ONCE in Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Déniz.

With their presence, they all showed their commitment for the diffusion of this resource and their support towards the Deafblind people.

Also, we had the support from Deafblind people from the Canary Islands and guide-interpreters from ASOCIDE of Canary Islands that made this act accessible.

In the afternoon, the Conference began, with the intervention of Francisco Javier Trigueros, as President of FASOCIDE, in which he gave an explanation of what is Deafblindness, which are the main features of the Deafblind collective and the different types of communication systems that they use. He also spoke of the association activity of the Deafblind and explained briefly the history of ASOCIDE from its beginning until its current functioning and the creation and launch of FASOCIDE.

After this, Antonio Acosta, representative of the Territorial Council of Canary Islands, shared with the rest of the participants the experiences and development of the association, according to the main needs of this one, in the Canary Islands.
